## Start With the Strategy, Not the Distribution

What Is a Covered Call ETF? is best approached as an options-strategy comparison rather than an income ranking. Covered-call ETFs convert part of expected equity upside into current option premium, and the trade-off varies with overwrite percentage, strike selection, option tenor and underlying equity exposure.

## How the Option Overlay Changes the Outcome

A call option premium is compensation for giving another market participant the right to participate above a strike price. When a fund systematically writes calls, that premium can support distributions, but the written option can also cap some gains during a strong rally.

- Underlying equity index or stock-selection process
- Percentage of portfolio notionally covered by calls
- At-the-money versus out-of-the-money strike policy
- Daily, weekly or monthly option tenor
- Index options versus single-stock options
- Distribution policy and historical composition

## The Metrics Worth Comparing

Distribution rate measures cash paid relative to NAV or market price; it does not show whether the fund earned that amount economically over the same period. Total return, NAV trend and distribution composition provide the missing context.

## Market Regimes to Test

- Strong bull market: capped upside can create meaningful relative underperformance.
- Sideways volatile market: repeated option premium can be more valuable.
- Sharp selloff: option income may cushion part of the loss but does not eliminate equity downside.
- Low-volatility market: call premium can fall, reducing the income advantage.
- Rapid rebound after a decline: calls written after the selloff can interfere with recovery participation.

## How the Funds Differ

### JEPI

JEPI uses an actively managed U.S. equity portfolio with an options-based income overlay and targets monthly distributable income with lower-volatility characteristics. ### JEPQ

JEPQ applies the equity-premium-income concept to Nasdaq-oriented equities, creating more growth-sector exposure than a broad-market income fund. ### QQQI

QQQI is actively managed around Nasdaq-100 exposure and uses sold and purchased NDX index options, with monthly distributions and a tax-aware index-option approach. [Official QQQI page](https://neosfunds.com/qqqi/?ref=blog.financely.io)

### SPYI

SPYI applies NEOS's active index-option income approach to S&P 500 exposure. [Official SPYI page](https://neosfunds.com/spyi/?ref=blog.financely.io)

## Questions to Ask Before Using the Comparison

### Is the highest distribution rate automatically the best result?

No. Distribution rate is only one output. Compare total return, NAV behavior, volatility, tax composition, fees and the amount of upside sacrificed.

### Do covered-call ETFs protect against a market crash?

Only partially. Option premium can reduce losses at the margin, but these funds generally retain substantial equity-market downside.

### Does return of capital always mean the fund is losing money?

No. Tax classification can label part of a distribution as return of capital even when the fund has positive economic return. The long-run NAV and total-return record provide better context.

### Should ETF comparisons use current distribution rates alone?

No. Rates change with option volatility, portfolio value and distribution policy. A comparison should use a consistent date and distinguish SEC yield from broader distribution metrics.
