## The SBLC Deal That Sounds Too Good, Explained in Plain English

A message we get often goes something like this: "I want a turnkey solution. Issue me an SBLC, monetize it, non-recourse. If it really happens, I am in." It sounds simple. A bank gives you a guarantee, someone lends you money against it, and you owe nothing.

That exact deal doesn't exist. This short guide explains why in everyday terms, and what you can do instead. For the full technical breakdown, read our deep dive on [real turnkey SBLC solutions, issuance and discounting](https://www.financely-group.com/real-turnkey-sblc-solutions-issuance-discounting-and-what-works?ref=blog.financely.io).

### First, what is an SBLC?

A standby letter of credit is a promise from a bank. It says: "If our customer doesn't pay you, we will." It works like a safety net. It isn't money in an account, and in a normal deal nobody ever uses it.

### Why the "turnkey" version doesn't work

### 1\. The bank needs to trust you first

A bank only makes that promise for a customer it already trusts, usually one with savings, assets or a credit line. Most banks ask for cash covering the full amount.

### 2\. You'd be borrowing against your own money

If you put up USD 10 million for the SBLC and then borrow USD 7 million against it, you have tied up more than you received. Borrowing directly against the USD 10 million is cheaper.

### 3\. "Non-recourse" can't apply to you

If the SBLC is ever used, the bank pays and then asks you to pay it back. That is the deal you sign to get one. You are never free of the obligation.

### 4\. "Leased" SBLCs are a known scam

No real bank rents its promise to a stranger for a fee. Offers to lease an SBLC are a common way to collect upfront fees and disappear.

**Simple rule.** An SBLC can't create money that isn't already behind you. If someone offers you cash, no obligation and no collateral through an SBLC, walk away.

### When it does work

There is one real version, and it works the other way around. If a customer of yours has its bank issue an SBLC to **you**, to guarantee an invoice it owes you, a lender can pay you that money early. The lender is relying on your customer's bank, not on you. That is called discounting. It is legitimate, and in that case it can even be without recourse to you. ### Frequently asked questions

Can I get an SBLC issued and monetized with no obligation?

No. If the SBLC is used, the bank that issued it will ask you to repay. That obligation is why the bank agreed to issue it.

Is SBLC monetization always a scam?

No. Discounting is real when you are the one receiving the SBLC from a customer's bank, as security for money that customer owes you.
