Renewable Energy Brief

September 10, 2026

Renewable energy capital continues to move toward projects that combine contracted generation, storage, grid access and visible routes to long-term cash flow. Recent transactions in the UK, Chile and continental Europe show lenders and infrastructure investors continuing to commit capital to operating and construction-stage assets, while government programs in Asia are widening the investment pipeline.

For developers approaching financing, the current market continues to reward bankable revenue, credible construction budgets, experienced counterparties and capital structures that can withstand changes in power prices, interest rates and completion timing. Financely advises sponsors through project finance for renewable energy projects , including debt structuring, lender distribution and capital raising.

Today's financing signal: capital remains available, but the strongest execution is concentrating around assets with contracted revenues, established sponsors, storage integration and clear grid positions.

Cero Generation Closes Financing for 190 MW UK Solar and Storage Project

Cero Generation has reached financial close on refinancing and construction financing for the 190 MW Larks Green co-located solar PV and battery storage project in Gloucestershire.

The lender group includes ING, NORD/LB, Rabobank and Santander UK. The transaction follows earlier financings within Cero's portfolio facility, including Bramley and West Burton.

The structure is relevant because it combines refinancing with construction capital inside a portfolio framework rather than financing the asset as an isolated project. Dentons confirmed the financial close on September 9 .

Financing read-through

Portfolio facilities can reduce repeated execution work across a developer's pipeline and give lenders exposure to a broader asset base. For sponsors with several projects approaching construction, financing the portfolio can become more efficient than running separate lender processes for every asset.

Cero's 5.8 GW European Platform Changes Hands

The Larks Green financing follows a separate corporate transaction around Cero itself. Qualitas Energy has agreed to acquire Cero Generation's core European platform from Macquarie Group.

The portfolio totals approximately 5.8 GW of solar PV and battery storage projects, including more than 2 GW operating, under construction or ready to build, with a further 3.8 GW under development.

The transaction gives Qualitas Energy a large established development and operating platform across the UK, Italy and Spain.

Financing read-through

Platform transactions remain an important exit route for developers that can aggregate projects beyond the development stage. A large pipeline becomes substantially more valuable when grid rights, permits, construction progress, PPAs and financing readiness have already been established.

Grenergy Completes $475 Million Chile Solar and Storage Sale

Grenergy has completed the sale of the Gabriela phase of its Oasis de Atacama platform in Chile to CVC DIF for an enterprise value of approximately $475 million.

Gabriela comprises 272 MW of solar generation and approximately 1,100 MWh of battery storage. Completion followed the project entering operations.

The $475 million completed transaction reinforces the role of operational solar-plus-storage assets as institutional infrastructure investments.

Financing read-through

Developers increasingly have several ways to monetize a project: sell at ready-to-build, finance construction and sell after COD, refinance operating assets or retain them and recycle capital at portfolio level. The financing strategy should be built with the intended exit route in mind.

Storage Is Moving Into Existing Renewable Assets

Financial close has also been reached on a 15 MW / 60 MWh battery storage system at the operational Windpark Greenport Venlo in the Netherlands.

The battery will operate alongside the existing 39 MW wind farm and use the same grid connection through cable pooling. The project moved into construction after reaching financial close .

This type of retrofit is important for project finance because storage can create additional revenue streams without requiring an entirely new generation site or grid connection.

Thailand Commits $1.52 Billion to Rooftop Solar

Thailand will launch a 50 billion baht, approximately $1.52 billion, rooftop solar support program in mid-October.

The government will also provide tax exemptions on certain imported solar panel components. Reuters reported the program on September 9 .

Financing read-through

Large distributed-generation programs create financing demand below the utility-scale project level. Aggregators, installers and asset owners can require warehouse facilities, receivables financing, equipment finance and portfolio refinancing as installations accumulate.

US Electricity Demand Is Setting New Records

The US Energy Information Administration expects electricity consumption to reach record levels in both 2026 and 2027, driven in part by data centers and wider electrification.

EIA forecasts total US power demand of approximately 4,270 billion kWh in 2026 and 4,349 billion kWh in 2027. Renewables are expected to increase their share of generation from roughly 24% in 2025 to 27% in 2027. Reuters reported the updated EIA outlook .

For renewable developers, rising load is positive only where transmission capacity, interconnection and offtake can keep pace. Projects that already control grid access will retain a material advantage over speculative pipelines.

Clean Hydrogen Investment Passes $130 Billion

Committed investment in clean hydrogen projects has now exceeded $130 billion globally, according to the Hydrogen Council's 2026 market assessment.

More than 570 committed projects represent approximately 6.9 million tonnes of annual clean hydrogen production capacity. The sector still faces difficult economics, particularly around production costs and firm demand. Reuters reported the latest investment figures today .

Financing read-through

Capital commitments alone do not establish bankability. Hydrogen projects still need durable offtake, credible feedstock and power assumptions, EPC certainty and enough sponsor equity to absorb construction and ramp-up risk.

Capital Markets View

The transactions above point to a market that is becoming more selective rather than less active.

Banks and infrastructure investors are financing operating renewables, construction-stage projects and large portfolios. Storage is increasingly being incorporated into generation assets, and large power consumers are strengthening the demand case for new capacity.

The difficult part remains moving from development value to financeable value. Grid position, land rights, permits, EPC terms, offtake, financial model assumptions and sponsor capitalization determine how much debt and outside equity a project can support.
