## How to Start a Career in Trade Finance in 2026

To start a career in trade finance in 2026, pick an entry route (trade operations, credit or client coverage), earn a recognised certification such as CDCS, and apply where the hiring gap is widest: transaction banking teams, commodity trading houses and trade finance funds. Demand is rising while experienced specialists retire, so motivated newcomers are scarcer than open seats.

### Why there is a shortage of trade finance professionals

Trade finance has a demographic problem. A May 2025 paper published by the [International Trade and Forfaiting Association](https://itfa.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/THE-SILENT-CRISIS-UNDERSTANDING-THE-EXPERTISE-GAP-IN-GLOBAL-TRADE-FINANCE-OPERATIONS-May-2025.pdf?ref=blog.financely.io) reports that over a quarter of practitioners are 55 or older, that 83% of early-career professionals entered the field by chance, and that only 9% of universities teach relevant coursework.

Banks also offshored operations to low-cost hubs and now hire mostly senior staff, which left a missing middle. Meanwhile, the [Asian Development Bank](https://www.adb.org/news/demand-trade-finance-rise-amid-supply-chain-realignment-adb-report?ref=blog.financely.io) put the global trade finance gap at USD 2.5 trillion in its January 2026 survey.

As ICC Academy [noted in August 2026](https://academy.iccwbo.org/trade-finance/article/the-next-skills-crisis-in-trade-finance/?ref=blog.financely.io), much of the expertise lives in people rather than manuals, and AI tools still need specialists who can challenge their output.

### Certifications and skills employers want

**CDCS** remains the benchmark for documentary credits, and ICC Academy runs broader [trade finance certifications](https://academy.iccwbo.org/trade-finance-certifications?ref=blog.financely.io) including CTFP. Add working knowledge of the rules behind each instrument ([UCP 600, ISP98 and URDG 758](https://www.financely-group.com/difference-between-ucp-600-isp98-urdg-758?ref=blog.financely.io)), [digital trade documents](https://www.financely-group.com/eucp-eurc-and-digital-letters-of-credit-explained?ref=blog.financely.io), and enough AI literacy to review machine output critically.

### Where to apply

Graduate programmes in transaction banking, trade operations hubs, commodity trading houses, trade finance funds, credit insurers and fintech platforms. Referrals matter in a small field with long tenures, where 72% of practitioners stay more than a decade, per the same ITFA paper. Industry events from ITFA, BAFT and ICC are where those networks meet.

### Want to work on live trade finance mandates?

Financely is an advisory and arranging firm, not a lender. We structure [commodity and trade finance](https://www.financely-group.com/commodity-trade-finance?ref=blog.financely.io) for corporates and place it with lenders.

### Frequently asked questions

Do I need a finance degree to work in trade finance?

No. Banks hire graduates from law, languages, economics, logistics and engineering. Product knowledge comes from training and certifications such as CDCS, which most employers value more than the degree subject.

What is the best entry-level trade finance job?

Trade operations roles, such as documentary credit checker or trade services officer, teach the documents and rules every other role relies on. Many credit analysts and relationship managers started there.

Which certification should I take first?

For documentary credits, CDCS from the London Institute of Banking and Finance with ICC is the reference qualification. Broader programmes such as ICC Academy's CTFP suit those who want product breadth first.

Is Financely a lender or a recruiter?

Neither. Financely is a debt advisory and arranging firm. We structure trade and commodity finance and place it with banks, funds and private credit lenders.
